It’s no secret that Yiddish, once the language of the majority of the world’s Jews, is today concentrated in ultra-Orthodox populations centers in Israel and the anglophone world. To what extent do these communities preserve distinct pre-WWII varieties of the language? And to what extent do they show innovation and even convergence of dialects?
Dr. Leyzer Burko, an expert in contemporary Hasidic Yiddish, will guide us through an exploration of the evolution of Yiddish in the contemporary Orthodox world.

Leyzer Burko is a Yiddish scholar originally from New York. His dissertation focused on the history of Yiddish language scholarship in the postwar period, especially the work of the YIVO Linguistic Circle. His current research is mainly in Yiddish lexicography, dialectology, and etymology, in the form of an online Yiddish dialect dictionary. Besides the prewar dialects once spoken in Europe, he also aims to cover the contemporary dialects spoken in Orthodox, especially Hasidic communities.
