Yiddish High Holidays Song Workshop

As we celebrate the Jewish High Holidays, lomir zingn af Yiddish! We will read, translate, and sing some wonderful Yiddish songs that celebrate and honour Rosh Hashonah, Yom Kippur, Sukkes and Simchas Toyrah. Examining their historical, political, and educational value, songs will include Di Yontevdike Teg, In Suke, Kinder Mir Hobn Simkhes-Toyre, Volt ikh Gehat Koyekh… and more. Song sheets will be provided in Yiddish and English transliterations; prior knowledge of Yiddish is not required. Kosher holiday-themed refreshments will be served.

Janie Respitz is a Yiddish scholar and entertainer. For more than thirty years, she has performed in concerts throughout the world and taught courses relating to Yiddish language, folklore, literature and Eastern European Jewish history, at Queen’s University, McGill University, Bernard Betel Centre, Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors and a variety of other learning environments. Janie has delighted audiences with her vast repertoire of Yiddish songs and lecture topics in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Windsor, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Klez Kanada, New York, Krakow, Montevideo, Israel and in 2019 won the international Yiddish Idol song competition in Mexico City! At the Miles Nadal JCC, Janie led the 2025 Passover Song Workshop, performed the one-woman show Manger’s Megilleh to a standing ovation, and delighted us at the 2026 Purim Concert and Freylekh – we are very happy to welcome her back this fall!
